D N Z[ENO PE]RP VG, Helmeted, draped and cuirassed bust right / D[N LEO...?], Victory with spread wings advancing left, carrying wreath and dragging captive, no mintmark. 13mm, 0.9 grams. Constantinople mint. RIC 947.(Image courtesy ACC) *** For the first year or so of his second reign Zeno reigned with a certain "Leo Caesar" (not to be confused with Leo II), who was the son of Armatus, the nephew of Basiliscus and (reportedly) a lover of Zeno's wife. The original name of the boy was Basiliscus, but apperantly it was changed to "Leo" after the downfall of the Emperor Basiliscus in 476. With the murder of Armatus in 477 (ordered by Zeno), Leo Caesar disappears from the pages of history. Only a few coins of Leo Caesar are known (always jointly with Zeno), in gold and bronze, all very rare. *** R2
